Signs of a Gas Leak

Natural gas and LPG are odourised with a sulphur compound, and that rotten egg smell is your earliest warning. But not every gas leak in a house has an obvious smell. Here’s what else to look for:

  • Smell: a rotten egg or sulphur odour near appliances, lines, or outside your meter
  • Sound: a hissing or whistling noise near gas pipes, fittings, or appliances
  • Dead vegetation: unexplained patches of dead or dying plants near underground gas lines
  • High gas bills: a slow leak you can’t smell may quietly show up as unusual usage on your bill
  • Physical symptoms: dizziness, headaches, nausea, or fatigue when you’re inside, especially in poorly ventilated rooms
  • Bubbles: apply soapy water to a gas fitting and watch for bubbling; that’s how to detect a gas leak at the connection point

If you’re experiencing any of these signs, treat it as a gas leak until a licensed gas fitter confirms otherwise.

What to Do If You Smell Gas

  1. Do not touch any electrical switches. Don’t turn lights on or off, don’t use your phone inside, don’t use a torch. Any spark can ignite gas.
  2. Evacuate immediately. Get everyone out, including pets.
  3. Open doors and windows as you leave to ventilate the property.
  4. Turn off the gas supply at the meter if you can safely access it on your way out.
  5. Call Universal Plumbing on 0439 644 483 from outside the property.
  6. Call your gas provider’s emergency line. APA Group for natural gas on the Sunshine Coast, or your LPG supplier if you’re on bottled gas.
  7. Do not re-enter the property until a licensed gas fitter has inspected and cleared the premises.

Gas Leak Detection

Gas leak detection requires the right equipment and a methodical process. A leak that isn’t visible can still be dangerous, which is why we use multiple methods:

  • Electronic Gas Detectors: Handheld devices that measure gas concentration in the air. These can pinpoint a leak source even when it’s not visible to the eye, letting us follow the concentration gradient directly to the source.
  • Manometer Pressure Testing: We pressurise your gas system and monitor it for pressure drops over time. This tells us whether a leak exists, how severe it is, and whether there’s more than one point of escape.
  • Soapy Water Testing: Applied to visible gas fittings, joints, and connections. Bubbles form at the exact point gas is escaping, giving us a precise location to repair.
  • Visual Inspection: A full check of all gas connections, regulators, valves, and appliance fittings for signs of wear, corrosion, or physical damage.

Using all four methods together means nothing gets missed.

Gas Line Leak Repair Process

Once we’ve located the leak, repairs are carried out on the spot wherever possible. What that looks like depends on what we find:

  • Loose fittings: tightening connections and replacing worn washers, seals, or O-rings
  • Damaged gas lines: cutting out and replacing corroded, cracked, or structurally compromised pipe sections
  • Faulty appliance connections: repairing or replacing the gas connection to the appliance itself
  • Regulator issues: replacing a leaking or failed gas regulator

After every gas line leak repair, we re-pressurise the entire system and hold it under pressure to confirm it’s completely gas-tight. All repairs come with a gas compliance certificate issued to confirm the work meets Australian Standards.

Common Causes of Gas Leaks on the Sunshine Coast

Gas leaks on the Sunshine Coast don’t happen randomly; there are specific reasons this region sees the issues it does.

  • Ageing infrastructure
  • Coastal corrosion
  • Unlicensed prior work
  • Ground movement
  • Appliance wear

Knowing why a leak happened matters. It’s the difference between patching a symptom and actually fixing the problem.

FAQs

Gas line leak repair cost depends on where the leak is and how extensive the damage is. Tightening a loose-fitting costs considerably less than replacing a section of underground pipe. We provide upfront pricing after detection, so you know what you’re paying before any repair work starts.

The most recognisable sign is a rotten egg or sulphur smell near your gas lines or appliances. Other indicators include a hissing sound near fittings, unexplained dead vegetation near underground gas lines, an unusually high gas bill, or feeling dizzy or nauseous when inside.

Yes. Gas is highly flammable and can ignite from a single spark. In enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, it can also displace oxygen and cause carbon monoxide poisoning. If you suspect a leak, evacuate the property immediately and call from outside.

No. Gas leak repairs must only be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. DIY gas work is illegal in Queensland and carries serious safety risks. Call a professional and don’t attempt to locate or repair the leak yourself.

We pressure-test the entire gas system after every repair to confirm it’s fully sealed. Once it passes, we issue a gas compliance certificate confirming the work meets Australian Standards. You’ll have written documentation that your system is safe.
